The first month of a car loan
0% complete
This guide
Interest in month one is the full amount financed times the monthly rate. Principal is the rest of the payment.
The balance is largest at the start
Amount financed includes tax and excludes down payment and trade-in. The first interest charge uses that whole balance. On a long term, most of the first payment can be interest.
A zero rate makes the first month all principal. A high rate on a small payment, which a very long term produces, keeps principal thin.
Ownership is due as well
The first month you also pay the insurance, the registration slice, the maintenance estimate, and the fuel. Those are not split into principal and interest.
The car total for the household month is that full stack, unless the loan payment is suppressed because it is already a debt.
Nothing is accrued in advance here
The schedule does not add odd-day interest before the first payment. The first row is month one of the amortizing payment. A contract with a long first period can differ by a small amount.
If you need the contract’s exact first coupon, use the lender’s schedule. Use this one for the shape of the loan and the month.
This explains how WiseCalculator treats the numbers you type. It is not a lender’s offer and it is not advice for your loan.
